2023 Academic Scholarship Recipient Tyler Compston

Tyler Compston West Virginia University – $5000 General Fund Scholarship

After a year of internships and energy related classes, I can say with certainty that I am right where I belong.

In the summer of 2022, I had the opportunity to work with the energy group at Steptoe & Johnson where I was exposed to careers in energy law. I worked on financial projects, land projects, and wrote memos on new case law in much of Appalachia. I extended my learning with Steptoe this winter when I was hired to draft title opinions.
I was elected as President of the Energy Law Association at the WVU College of Law for the 2022-2023 school year.

I have made it my mission to expose my classmates to the energy industry and show them that energy law is more than the rule against perpetuities. With the assistance of the EMLF and its members, the Energy Law Association organized a very successful in-person career panel in the fall of 2022. Additionally, I organized trips to EMLF conferences with students where we were expanded our knowledge outside of the classroom through continuing education classes and networking with lawyers currently working in the industry.

Moving forward, I will continue to serve as the President of the Energy Law Association and continue my mission to grow interest in the energy industry.

I will return this summer to Steptoe & Johnson and continue as a summer associate in the energy group. This fall, my courseload will include Coal, Oil, and Gas and participation in the Land Use and Sustainability Clinic. I am excited for grow my law career in energy and continue my involvement in the EMLF for years to come.
