EMLF Involvement: EMLF Member for several years through Steptoe & Johnson PLLC’s membership. I also spoke a few years ago on solar leasing along with two other attorneys.

Do you have a favorite anecdote or war story from your time as a lawyer? When I was pregnant with my second daughter, we were working on a large transaction for one of our clients. We were working 12+ hour days in the office to complete this transaction and every bit was needed for several months. I remember my colleagues checking in on me to make sure I was feeling okay! I ensured the team I wasn’t going into labor any time soon and continued forward. Years later the client still commented on my time during that project and being pregnant! My child was almost 9lbs whereas my first was only 6lbs, so I think all the food and candy we ate helped that weight gain! We still laugh about this time. We as a firm got really close working so many nights and weekends together. It was well worth it!

Where did you grow up? Meadville, PA

What is your area of practice, and how did you get involved in that area of law? Energy and Natural Resources. When I first came out of law school my firm was extremely busy in this area of law and so I started abstracting records in the court houses in West Virginia. I then started drafting oil and gas title opinions and became an associate with the firm. Over the years, I have had the pleasure of drafting various contracts, working, and running due diligence projects, and focusing on the real estate and land side of oil, gas, solar, and coal transactions.

You have spoken at a couple of EMLF events and have been involved in EMLF committees. Has that involvement benefitted you? Yes! I’ve enjoyed speaking on solar development and how solar leasing is similar and different to the oil and gas lease. Speaking at EMLF events and attending them has helped me broaden my network and increase my knowledge in areas outside of my specific practice area.

What two or three things have been most helpful to you in developing as a lawyer and as an attorney at your company? The firm provided us with mentors when we were hired and that really helped me! I had both male and female mentors willing to spend time training me. If you can find good trainers internally, it will really help you develop your career. I was fortunate to be placed on a team right away where I learned title from several of our Bridgeport, WV attorneys. On the leadership side and professional development, I’d be remiss to not mention Women’s Energy Network. I’ve learned a lot through this organization that has helped me in my personal and professional life!

Is there any advice you would give to new lawyers and law students who are about to become lawyers?  Listen and ask a lot of questions! No one should expect you to come out of law school knowing everything about your practice area. If your firm provides you with a mentor, use that person. They are there to help guide you along the way. Be patient.
