EMLF Law Student Scholarships Announced
Students attending EMLF member law schools are eligible to apply for $29,300 in scholarships for the 2008-09 academic year. In addition to the $20,000 in scholarship money provided by the EMLF general scholarship fund, the Bowles Scholarship and the Jimmy Davis Scholarship, additional scholarships this year are the Foundation Coal Corporation Scholarship for $2800; the Mary Sue Schulberg Scholarship for $1500; and the $5000 Jan and Chester Keeton Scholarship, established to further the legal education of a student with a working background as a landman.
29th Annual Institute Program Announced
The program schedule for the May 18-20 Annual Institute in Lake Buena Vista, Florida is now available on the EMLF website at www.emlf.org. Program Chairman for the Annual Institute is Tim Gresham, Penn Stuart & Eskridge, Abingdon, VA; Coal Chairman is John T. Boyd II, John T. Boyd Co., Canonsburg, PA; and Oil & Gas Chairman Tim Miller at Robinson & McElwee, Charleston, WV. The annual institute will provide approximately 10.2 – 12.2 hours of CLE credit, including 2 hours of ethics.
EMLF Winter Workshops on Energy Law
Last week’s Winter Workshops in Sanibel, Florida, focused on evolving policy issues related to carbon constraints in the face of worldwide demand for energy products. Amid projections of a continued strong share of the power generation fuel supply coming from coal and coal with carbon sequestration, experts agreed that renewables, nuclear, oil, and gas will all have to be utilized to meet future power demands, with coal to liquids a key option to lessen dependence on foreign oil imports. Critiqued by the GC of a major coal company, the 2008 winter workshops were deemed “the best program the EMLF has ever given.”
Massey Energy Names New General Counsel
M. Shane Harvey Promoted to Position
RICHMOND, Va., Jan. 28 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ — Massey Energy Company (NYSE: MEE) announced today that the company has promoted M. Shane Harvey to the position of general counsel.
Harvey, 38, has served as vice president and assistant general counsel at Massey Energy since November 2006, with primary responsibility for legal matters involving environmental compliance, health and safety compliance and federal and state regulatory issues. As general counsel, Harvey will continue to oversee these areas of responsibility while assuming additional authority over all legal matters of concern to the company, including coordination with outside counsel.

Harvey has worked closely with Massey’s group operations during his tenure and is familiar with all aspects of the company. He received his law degree from West Virginia University School of Law, where he was an editor of the National Coal Issue of the law review. Before entering law school, he worked as an analyst for Goldman Sachs International in London. He earned a B.S. in Finance at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech) and graduated first among his fellow finance majors.
