Favorite bar or restaurant in current home city? Dockside in the summer – They have a great atmosphere with live music on the weekends plus it is at the marina where we dock our boat.
EMLF Involvement: I am on the Board of Trustees and am Co-chairing the Annual Institute this year. I think EMLF is a great organization and I look forward to becoming more involved.
Where did you grow up? Flatwoods, WV
What is your area of practice? I primarily focus my practice on litigation. I manage all of Antero’s litigation matters.
How did you get involved in that area of law? I grew up around the conventional oil and gas industry in West Virginia and have always wanted to work in oil and gas. From the time I was young, I enjoyed reading through contracts and learning more about the legal side of the industry, so I decided I wanted to be an oil and gas lawyer. I never had typical childhood dreams of becoming a veterinarian or anything of that sort – I decided I wanted to be a lawyer and never changed course.
You have spoken at a couple of EMLF events and have been involved in EMLF committees. Has that involvement benefited you? If so, how? Yes! EMLF has given me the opportunity to meet and build relationships with attorneys I would not have met otherwise. It is helpful to be able to call folks working in the same industry to discuss issues we are facing and brainstorm possible solutions.
Looking back, what two or three things have been most helpful to you in developing as a lawyer and as an attorney at your company? I think it is important as an in-house lawyer to start building strong relationships with people at your company on Day 1. Learn challenges folks face in their respective roles and figure out areas where you might be able to provide assistance. It is important to learn the “who does what” within the various departments and start building a network of folks within your company.
Is there any advice you would give to new lawyers and law students who are about to become lawyers? Find a great mentor (or mentors) and stay in touch with them. Work hard and seek opportunities to get involved in as many areas as you are interested, but don’t forget to prioritize your personal time, health, and wellness. As the quote goes, “Choose to take time for your health now or you’ll be forced to later.”
