Sydney Kimberlain
Appalachian School of Law
Sydney Kimberlain is the recipient of the James H. Davis Scholarship, a scholarship for a student with Appalachian roots endowed by the National Council of Coal Lessors and its members, and an EMLF Scholarship. Sydney is an Eastern Kentucky native with a strong commitment to returning to and serving the Appalachian region through environmental and natural resources law.
Growing up in a rural community in Eastern Kentucky, Sydney has seen both the resilience of Appalachian communities and the economic challenges created by the decline of the coal industry. These experiences have shaped her desire to remain in the region and contribute to its long-term stability and growth, rather than pursue opportunities elsewhere.
Her academic and professional experiences reflect a sustained interest in environmental and natural resources law. She has participated in programs such as TreeCATs and the Natural Resources and Environmental Sciences Academy, engaged in environmental cleanup projects, and completed coursework in biology. She also attended the Local Government Attorneys of Virginia Fall Conference, where she gained exposure to land use, mineral rights, and legal issues affecting Appalachian communities. She is currently pursuing a Natural Resources Law certificate at the Appalachian School of Law to further deepen her expertise in this area.
Through these experiences, Sydney has developed a clear professional focus on environmental advocacy and legal service in Appalachia. Following the completion of her Juris Doctor, she intends to practice in the region, working on issues at the intersection of environmental protection, energy development, and rural economic development.
