How did you get involved in this area of the law? I went to law school hoping to practice family law. I was fortunate enough to be offered a summer associate position at K&L Gates, and while I was wary about deviating from my plan, I was excited that there would be so many different practice areas to try. I enjoyed working with the energy litigation attorneys and the application of contract, tort, and property principles from law school to a specific industry, and was fortunate enough to join the practice full time after several years.
What has being involved with EMLF meant to you? Has your involvement had a positive effect on your career, and if so, how? The connections I have made absolutely have benefited my career! The conferences offer a great opportunity to network, to learn, to catch-up in person with friends, and to make new friends.
Do you find time to travel for fun? Do you have a favorite place to visit? My family and I love relaxing at any beach. We go to Bethany Beach most summers but have been trying different places over spring break. We have recently started to visit more cities now that my youngest is a bit older, too.
Favorite books/authors, genre? Other hobbies? My favorite hobby is reading. I prefer fiction, but nothing with too big of a mystery, because I will either stay up all night to find out what happens or read the last chapter halfway through so I can get some sleep.
Is there any advice you would give to new lawyers and law students who are about to become lawyers? First, stay in touch with your law school network and make sure to allow yourself time and space to make new friends and mentors in the workplace. It is a lot easier to face the challenges that come with practicing law if you have a strong support system that understands those challenges. Second, show interest in your work so that your colleagues and clients appreciate your dedication. If you can make that connection, your colleagues will likewise be dedicated to your development into a successful attorney.
