Ally Goedecke is a law student and recipient of an EMLF scholarship whose interest in environmental and energy law was shaped by growing up in Michigan, where issues involving water quality and natural resource protection are a significant part of public discourse.

Living near the Great Lakes, Goedecke became aware of the legal and policy challenges surrounding environmental issues, particularly concerns related to PFAS contamination and access to clean drinking water. Those experiences sparked an interest in understanding how laws and regulations influence environmental outcomes and affect communities.

That interest continued in law school through coursework in Environmental Law and participation in an Environmental Law Moot Court competition. Through these experiences, Goedecke explored the complex relationship between economic development, public health, and environmental stewardship while gaining practical experience researching regulatory frameworks and developing legal arguments.

“Environmental law requires balancing economic development, public health, and the long-term protection of natural resources,” Goedecke said in her personal statement. “I value the role that environmental and energy law plays in addressing complex problems that affect entire communities.”

Goedecke plans to continue exploring opportunities in environmental and energy law and looks forward to further developing her understanding of the legal and policy issues that shape the future of natural resource management and environmental protection.
