The Energy & Mineral Law Foundation (EMLF) is proud to announce it has presented its 2022 John L. McClaugherty Award to Timothy M. Miller. Tim is a shareholder in the Charleston, West Virginia, office of Babst Calland, a longtime member and former president of EMLF. He was nominated for this award by numerous EMLF members. “Tim is truly deserving both for his time and dedication to the profession as an oil and gas lawyer, his volunteerism and support of EMLF, and his kindness and integrity as a colleague. He exemplifies the qualities the award recognizes and is well deserving of this recognition. “I can easily affirm that Tim displays the values and character that led the EMLF to create an award in Mr. McClaugherty’s name to begin with. These include a strong dedication to his clients and to the development of sound energy-related jurisprudence, a collegiality with other practitioners that palpably surpasses any adversarial encounters in our professional roles, and a genuine willingness to teach those who are coming after him the satisfaction that can come from engaging in an energy practice in the way he does it.” Tim was presented with the award by the 2021, Erin E. Magee, who said, “I look around EMLF and I see all of these people you’ve mentored in your career and…they credit you in great part for their success.” Tim indicated that he was shocked and appreciative to receive the award, having known many previous winners, and Mr. McClaughtery himself. Of EMLF he said, “I truly enjoy this organization because of the collegiality…many of the lawyers are competitors, opponents, or collaborators…and it’s so nice to find an organization that treats each other with respect and appreciates the hard work everyone does…” In addition to his work with EMLF, Tim has served as chairman of the WV Defense Trial Counsel Energy Subcommittee. He also annually participates as a volunteer judge for the WVU Energy Law moot court competition and has spearheaded the firm’s sponsorship of that event. Tim is also active in the Charleston community, currently serving on the board of the local United Way and Manna Meal. The McClaugherty Award is the Foundation’s highest honor and is given annually to a member to recognize their outstanding contributions to the Foundation and to the field of energy and mineral law. It is named in honor of a former member and past president, the late John L. McClaugherty, who spent many decades practicing at Jackson Kelly, including serving as managing member for nearly twenty years. EMLF is a non-profit organization that is an accredited provider of continuing education for lawyers, landmen, and other energy professionals. For more information about EMLF, visit emlf.org.
